Best Use of Heritage in Placemaking – Planning Awards 2019

SHORTLISTED and HIGHLY COMMENDED

Spanish City
ADP and North Tyneside Council
Submission Summary:

Spanish City was completed and open to the public during summer 2018.

The essence of this revival is intrinsic to this award. The works to the iconic Spanish City have safeguarded a regionally important grade II listed building, its public spaces and gardens and has breathed new life into the coastal community of Whitley Bay and wider North East. Regenerating a long-term reminder of decline into a focal point of hope, pride, prosperity and confidence for local people and visitors, now and for years to come, as it did when first built over 100 years ago, is a true transformation.
